Lake of the Ozarks
Polar Bear Plunge & Strut

Yes, there are people who get into the water in February, even at Lake of the Ozarks. But it takes a very “special” reason for these folks to join in the Polar Bear Plunge at Public Beach #2 in Osage Beach. The 2010 plunge is the 15th annual event, with proceeds going to Special Olympics Missouri as usual.

The agenda for the day includes the 8th annual strut, a 5-kilometer run/walk is held in the morning. But the more hardy (foolish?) people gathered at the beach at 2:30 p.m. to plunge into water that is hardly above freezing (38 degrees Fahrenheit in 2009). Event organizers welcomed more than 500 brave souls last year and expect an equal turnout this year.

The total number of people who have taken the plunge for Special Olympics through the years is nearing 9000. The effort has been more than successful, with nearly $2 million raised in 14 years. If 600 “plungers” show up this year and the pledges are up to par, the even could raise more than $160,000.

The one-day schedule includes a costume parade, one of the highlights of the event. People who take part in the bone-chilling activity put a lot of thought and creativity into their costumes. In the past, onlookers have seen cartoon characters, musical celebrities, animals and well-known politicians (or someone who looks like a well-known politician).

Awards are presented in various categories, including law enforcement agency teams, school-related groups, general team effort and individual costume. The slightly warmer Polar Bear Strut begins at city hall in Osage Beach. Those who participate in this part of the fund-raising generally cover the 5k course in about an hour. About 150 people generally take part in the strut, with some doubling their fun by plunging into the lake later in the day.

A recent addition to the activities: Super Plungers, individuals who take to the water once an hour for 24 hours. 2010 will be the third year for this day-long event that begins Friday afternoon. Many of the individual Super Plungers will raise $5,000 for the cause.

People who want to enjoy the fun and stay warm can watch the Strut and the Plunge while enjoying snacks and beverages. Souvenirs of the Plunge will also be available. If you thought the lake region was only popular in summer, come to the Polar Bear Plunge & Strut!
