Lake of the Ozarks
Olde Tyme Apple Festival
Visitors to the Lake of the Ozarks during the fall season often plan their trip around the Olde Tyme Apple Festival in October. This annual event has exploded in popularity over the years and now draws as many as 30,000 visitors every year. Scheduling information is also available at http://www.versailleschamber.org/.
The Olde Tyme Apple Festival has been a popular destination for more than 30 years, attracting people of all ages. Organizers plan carefully to provide a “family atmosphere” and a wide variety of fun activities to pass the time. The festival is consistently rated one of the best events in rural Missouri and the 2010 event promises to be as big as any past event.
Automotive fans and nostalgia buffs will really enjoy the Car Cruise and Sock Hop, traditionally held on Friday, starting at the Sonic Drive-In in Versailles. The cruise is followed by the car show, where dozens of classic cars and vintage autos are on display (motorcycles too!). Don’t worry! There will be plenty for the farm implement and tractor enthusiasts to enjoy as well.
No festival would be complete without a grand parade and the Olde Tyme Apple Festival is no exception. At 10 a.m. on Saturday morning the parade makes its way through Versailles featuring clowns, school bands, more of those classic cars and floats, all following a theme that is changed each year.
Like many communities in central Missouri, Versailles is not a huge city. But it’s certainly big enough to host a festival that offers hundreds of craft booths and food booths, many featuring items with an apple theme. Visitors are encouraged to bring their appetites and enjoy the popular turkey drumsticks and kettle corn. In addition to the many edible treats associated with apples, visitors to the Old Tyme Apple Festival seem to flock to the roasted corn on the cob and funnel cakes.
Each year judges select an Apple Festival King and Queen, along with the contests for the “Dumplins” in the crowd. Don’t miss the apple pie auction as area residents offer the best dessert items made from the freshest of fruit.
Visitors have come to expect the best food and fun at the Olde Tyme Apple Festival and they are seldom disappointed with the craft demonstrations, the Kids’ Fun Zone and the great live music. Even the music comes in a wide variety. Listeners are able to choose from country, gospel, blues and jazz, each on a different stage. But that’s not all! This festival has one of the most popular events of any gathering in the area – the Olde Tyme Fiddler’s Contest (2 p.m. at Royal Theatre). There’s something for everyone at the Olde Tyme Apple Festival in Versailles.
