"RIVER MONSTERS" The FINAL TAKE -

We leave our “RIVER MONSTERS” saga with a few final photo’s taken by Laura during filming – - and with some fun memories and stories that will stay with many of us for some time to come.  As a result of this, new friends were made and some “true” mystery’s have been uncovered.  Mike Gillespie has been doing research (still on going) which has uncovered some very interesting “facts” surrounding the incident on Memorial Day weekend of 1954, when a Lake of the Ozarks excursion boat capsized during a storm and as many as 8 persons were drowned.  This was the largest number of fatalities, resulting from a single boating accident on record for the lake so far. (SEE MIKE’S ARTICLE IN THE “POINTE” PAPER HERE).  We look forward to seeing the “final cut” of the RM story next season and hope that maybe one or more of our folks will be recognizable in the 2 seconds of blurred action, followed by brief flashes of underwater bubbles, thrashing arms and legs – - – - ahhh well – thats showbiz.

2ND THOUGHTS?

Our job with the boat was to provide some waves and lots of ‘white water” around the area where the “victims” would be in the water.  They would “fall” in (fully clothed) one at a time and thrash about and were to quickly come out on to the swim platform. Because we were busy “making waves”, Laura was unable to get a shot of them going in to the water – - Jonah (below) was able to get back out on to the swim platform.  When RYAN went in, the wash from the boat jet produced such a hard current, he was unable to get on the swim platform and had to go to shore – -

NOT TO BAD – -  BRRRRR!
FINAL TAKE
THE FINAL TAKE – - As we got the boys dried off and wrapped up the filming, we had one final shot to make - – the film crew hopped back aboard the boat and we headed for open water with the State Park in the back ground, we stopped and the “Director” pointed to the “Life Ring” we carry aboard and asked if he could use it, I said “of course”.  Shutting the engine down, they set the lonely “Ring” adrift behind us – - -, using some small underwater camera’s on pole’s, they rolled several different shots and angles from above and underwater of the drifting Life Ring – - – after all the “commotion” and the “excitement” of filming  - watching that Life Ring drifting alone in the water was a sobering reminder of what really took place 57 years ago when 8 souls were lost and “Realitycame rushing back to me – - – - – BOAT SAFE – -   WEAR A PFD

"RIVER MONSTERS" The final Chapter, Part 1

On a cold and chilly Sunday, MAY 1st, we completed our work with the “RIVER MONSTERS” team in the Grand Glaize Arm near the State Park.  Our mission for that day was to provide a moving “camera platform” for the RM film crew.  Along with several others from Kapilana Resort, our son-in- law Joe Dubinski, grandson Ryan Dubinski and cousin Jonah Dubinski of Overland Park, KS and Columbia, MO were given the honor of being “extra’s” and the two boys were given the dubious honor of being “victims” – - – (fact is the air temp that day was 46 deg with water temp hovering around 58 and they were the only two who “volunteered” to go in to the water  :-).  We think, since both boys are HUGE River Monsters fans, that had the “host” asked them to “swim” across the lake they would have done it!!

Filming began early with several “takes” of “Excursion” passengers boarding a 1949, 36ft Chris Craft Cruiser, graciously provided by Jan and Dan Mitzel.  The Mitzel’s cruiser is an on-going restoration process which requires a great deal of work and expense and they have done a fabulous job with her.

“ALL PHOTO’S BY LAURA MEYER”
Passenger’s boarding the sightseeing boat – TAKE 2?
Filming passengers boarding the “Excursion” boat

The next step in the process is where things began to get a bit “hairy” – the cruiser was to get underway and make maximum speed and we would follow with the camera crew – -
The “Director” told me to follow behind the cruiser “as close as possible” while the cameraman sat on the bow (sometimes, gripped firmly by the “director”)  - O.K. you want “close” “here we go” – -

WARNING – “DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME!”
“CLOSE”
CLOSER“?  (Cameraman turned to me and gave a big “thumbs up”)
Note:  He also had to pick up his feet

Well, that went fine  - and I figured we were going to settle down and do some routine filming – - WRONG! – the “director” now says to me – - (in that stern and precise British accent) – “that was fine, can we now do it in the front“? – - – uhhh – O.K. – (doing things up close and in dangerous situations is pretty much a regular occurrence with this business) –  but he sorta wants me to defy ALL safe boating practices – - perform some maneuvers that usually result in our being called out to “pick up the pieces” AND he wants me to do it on CAMERA!!!!  I looked at my wife Laura, who was just beginning to recover from the previous “takes” astern (in which she managed to get some pretty good shots) and the realization of what the “director” was asking had just sunk in with her – - – - before she could say “let me off!!!” I pushed the throttle forward while the camera crew moved to the stern – - and caught up with the unsuspecting cruiser – “Task 1” – run close down the starboard side and then cut ‘CLOSE” in front so the  camera crew would be under the bow – - o.k. – - boys –  here we go – -

One of several “passes” close to starboard
Cutting “close” across the bow (Shades of “Whale Wars”)
“BOW SHOT”
Cameraman saying; “that was good! Now let’s do it again!”

We repeated this little maneuver a couple of times, the last time we were close enough the camera crew got soaked by the cruiser bow wash – - -.  I want to compliment Captain Dan Mitzel for his STEADY HAND at the cruiser wheel – - it took great courage to remain calm and steady while being “run down” by a TowBoat – - .  Over the years, Laura has made quite a number of calmer “boat calls” with me, on this one, she really hung in there and rode it out!  She also somehow managed to get some GREAT SHOTS in spite of her “white knuckle” grip on the hand rail and “ashen color” from having the “bejeezes” scared out of her – -  enough excitement for now -.  WE WILL CLOSE THIS FINAL CHAPTER in OUR “RIVER MONSTERS” ADVENTURE WITH A LATER POST – -

Writer Note:  Before the comments come in – - Trying to get a British film crew in PFD’s is a struggle – and I am at fault for not insisting on they being more than just “close at hand” – should the occasion arise again in the future – - it will be a much different story.  In my defense – “Brits” are a stubborn lot – and they sorta took to PFD’s with the same attitude as they did when they chose to wear “Redcoats”in 1812, the outcome of which we all know – - – - – -

RIVER MONSTERS” COMES TO THE LAKE!
A Well known ANGLER, and the ICON FILMS PRODUCTION TEAM investigate Lake Myths and Legends and look for GIANT CATFISH!
The Producers of River Monsters”  (Icon Films, Bristol, U.K.contacted us a little over a month ago and requested we assist them in developing and filming a segment for the upcoming 4th season of this great cable network “Animal Planet” show.  They would be visiting four states in the U.S. and Lake of the Ozarks was one of the places they planned to film.  They were pursuing “GIANT CATFISH” stories, along with possible “MYTH’S and LEGENDS” of the area.  Lake area Historian and Author “Mike Gillespie” (LAKE AREA HISTORY PAGES)  provided them with some possible material to use.  We also provided them with some background and research on various topics over the following weeks.  We had no idea exactly what “story line” they intended to use until about a week before they arrived.  Along with Captain Tim McNitt (ATLANTIS DIVE) and his crew, we provided support vessels and filming platforms for them over two days.  The 4th season may have a 2 hour special which should include the Lake of the Ozarks.  We enjoyed meeting the “host” and found him and the entire team a great group to work with.  The Actor is very calm and easy to talk to and of course enjoys “Extreme Fishing”.  Having watched the show often and now meeting and working with him, I have even more respect and admiration for the show and his efforts.  I will be posting more in the future from this and related stories.  (PHOTO’S BY LAURA MEYER)

Boat-wake incident ends in tragedy

LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. – A day on the water ended in tragedy yesterday for an Oklahoma man and his nephew.

William C. Ray, 53, of Newcastle, Okla., and Scott A. Kimble, 39, of Buhler, Kan., were headed north at the 17-mile marker in an 18-foot Bass Tracker at 9 a.m., Thursday, when a larger cruiser passed by approximately a half-mile away. Misjudging the size of the wake, Kimble told the Water Patrol that the bass boat was traveling at about 45-50 mph as it hit the wake at a 90-degree angle. The boat reportedly jumped the first wake and was tipped hard to starboard by the second, dumping both men into 56F water.

Without lifejackets and weighed down by heavy clothing, the men began swimming for shore. After Kimble reached a dock he looked back to find Ray facedown in the water. Shortly thereafter, a Lake Ozark Fire Boat arrived at the scene and pulled Ray from the water and began pulmonary resuscitation. The effort was unsuccessful. Ray was declared dead by drowning at 11:07 a.m. at Lake Regional Hospital in Osage Beach, Mo.

OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH THE FAMILIES OF MR. KIMBLE

This is the second time in a week that fisherman have been in the water, last Friday (4/15/11) a small fishing boat was swamped by wind waves in Indian Creek cove of the Gravois Arm.  Putting some fishermen in the water, IN THIS CASE, ALL of them luckily made it to shore – - -

Along with ATLANTIS DIVE, we recovered that boat and there were NO INJURIES -

BOATING SEASON HAS OPENED – - !!

LAST SUNDAY (3/20/11), Captain Dave Anderson had the honor of getting our first legitimate Boating Season case, which wound up  being a chain reaction of Boating Follies that didn’t want to stop – - sorta like a “Train Wreck” – - We had a surprise sunny and 80 plus degree day, SO that means that many of our CABIN FEVER sufferers HAD to get on the water – - Not all were prepared.  MIX a newly purchased boat, out for the first time this year, add a Novice Boater at the helm, throw in a DISTRAUGHT wife, who was ready to immediately give up the family’s newest hobby – - “boating”, then throw in a DEAD BATTERY, 2 grand kids,  and you have a VERY VOLATILE MIX!  IT WENT KINDA LIKE BELOW:

This should have been a single, simple, at the dock “Jump Start” by vehicle.  Capt Dave arrives at Bridal Cave docks by truck and gets them started, they shove off and “kill” it about 100 yards out (oops!) – - It then turned in to a nightmare which had Capt Dave climbing up and down the bluffs at Bridal Cave carrying a 20 pound “Jump Pack” (which seemed to gain 25 lbs every time he told the story), providing services to this boat 3 separate times over the period of an hour.  Trying to catch them as the wind blew them toward shore, the “boater’s” attempt to throw a 6 ft line and think it will reach 30 feet!  At one point Dave asked them to throw him a longer line, like the “anchor line” he suggested, the wife threw him the end of the Anchor line, which he caught – - while the “husband” threw the ANCHOR over too! – - – Finally, (with the help of a good sam pontoon boat) Dave was able to capture them and get them started and running a second time at which point they headed for their Condo dock about 3 miles away – - – first going in the wrong direction – - Capt Dave finally makes it back to his truck (where he tipped his 14 year old “guide”who had lead him up and down the bluffs) and heads out to meet them at their dock, retrieve our jump pack and fill out the paper work – - he arrives where they should be, but doesn’t see them – - He hears voices several docks away and finds them once again DISABLED – ADRIFT with a stern line wrapped in their prop!! – - As the wind blows them close by a dock, he is able to get a line from them (after telling them to please keep the anchor on board) – and FINALLY Gets them to their home dock and the boat on it’s lift and untangled the mooring line from their prop – - YEP – THE SEASON IS OFFICIALLY OPEN!  LESSON LEARNED – - NEVER RESPOND TO ANY CALL WITHOUT A BOAT!!!! – - If this is an “omen” for the 2011 season – - we’re in TROUBLE!!

How are the inflated gas prices impacting the Lake of the Ozarks

Most people are currently planning for Memorial Day and summer vacations. However, many are wondering how are the inflated gas prices impacting the Lake of the Ozarks. Like tons of other hot spot vacation destinations the gas is tipping at the $4 range which is making people rethink their plans. Unlike many other destinations though the Ozarks are playing it smart and offering a $50 gas card at the beginning of June. That gesture will help to draw in more people this summer.

Lake of the Ozarks Gas Prices

Even though the number of people that are traveling each year is down the travel to the Lake of the Ozarks is still booming. Many hotels, restaurants and other local businesses understand that travelers are stressed due to the inflated gas prices so they are helping by cutting costs on their products and services to allow tourists to budget the trip better.

By offering discounts on the travel more visitors are able to make the trip with the extra money that they are saving. So even though there will be some tourist who are impacted by the rising gas prices and will not make the trip to the Ozarks this year many others will continue on with their plans as normal. It’s definitely unfair that many hard working individuals has to compromise their vacation time due to the outrageous gas prices but it’s just the way things go.

Lake of the Ozarks Gas Prices

If you plan on traveling to the Ozarks this summer make sure to take advantage of the $50 discount gas card that will be given away at the beginning of June. It can help ease the burden of money spent on gas especially for those who have quite a distance to go. There are many other ways to save as well if you book in advance and try to have your lodging and any tickets put together.

Life before the Lake of the Ozarks

Have you ever wondered what Life before the Lake of the Ozarks was like? What did you do to kill time and have fun during the summer months when you were on vacation? There where tons of lakes and land in the area that was preserved and untouched. The Vintage Ozarks had tons of small shops that were set along the roads of what is now known as the Lake of the Ozarks.

Bagnell Dam Strip Lake of the Ozarks

There were several beautiful wonders, mountains and open trails in which small mom and pop attractions where setup during the Depression days which was followed by the travels of people throughout the areas of Camdenton to Versailles. The walk ways and natural beauty that was found in this area amazed locals and tourist alike. If you weren’t one of the first to see or read about life before the Ozarks then you don’t know what you are missing out on.

There were many historic towns that were a vacationer’s paradise with tons of fishing camps, bridges, caves, resorts, natural springs and many other popular sites. There were many early attractions including the Ozark Water Ski Show, the Ozark Opry, Country Music Hall, square dancing and many other similar things. The caves throughout the area were great for those who enjoy hiking and exploring new territory. With so much beautiful scenery even those that first noticed that area knew that it had much to offer and that it would be enjoyed by many someday.

Lake of the Ozarks

Today the Lake of the Ozarks hosts tons of events and has travelers who visit from all around the world each year. Those who know the Ozark as it is today with all of the shops, lakes, beaches, caves, hotels, restaurants and attractions really have no clue what it was like before they all were created.

Fishing in the Ozarks

Fishing in the Lake of the Ozarks is a very popular activity and has only grown in the last decade. In fact there are hundreds if not thousands of fishermen and anglers who come to the lake every year. Whether it’s for the local tournaments or just family vacation the fishing here is remarkable. You can fish for bass, crappie and tons of other kinds of fish. The Lake of the Ozarks is very well known for their terrific stickbait fishing which is for bass.

If you plan on visiting the Lake of the Ozarks during the summer you will soon learn that it’s a great time of year for crappie, bass and bluegill. Whether you are a beginner or an advance fisherman you will enjoy your time here. Cat fishing usually starts getting good around July when the months are hot and they are starting to bite more. This is also the best season for those individuals who like boating.

During the September and October months you will have the pleasure of enjoying the boat traffic shows and with 70 degree days you can enjoy fishing for white bass. These speedy fish range from 1 to 5 pounds or larger and definitely make a great catch for a late fish fry after spending the day out on the lake. You can even fish in the winter months for a variety of fish including catfish, crappie and bass. It gets pretty cold in the Lake of the Ozarks so you will definitely want to bundle up. You may even get lucky enough to catch a paddlefish which can become very large ranging from 30 to 75 pounds. These type of fish are usually best to catch during the spring time in order to get the larger ones.

Are you a boater? The lake is ready for you!

Whether you are a local or a frequent visitor of the Lake of the Ozarks you know exactly just how much fun boating is here. Since the water level has risen over a foot with no flooding everyone is now preparing for boating season especially for Memorial Day.

With anticipated lake levels of 658.7, 658.9 and 659.05 the Bagnell Dam is scheduled to run a heavy generation. Since the dam has not had to open any of the flood gates this year the chances of it happening this later is pretty slim which is great for those who are looking forward to hitting the water with their boats.

If you are currently looking to visit the Lake of the Ozarks you will definitely enjoy your visit with the current water levels. If you don’t have your own boat the Ozarks has plenty of places in which you can actually rent a boat. Just make sure that you know how to properly run it before actually getting out on the water. You can choose to rent a smaller boat for just two or three people or a pontoon which can hold several people and make it a day of family fun.

Your vacation will beyond what you expected once you get out on the beautiful water and start to fish. There are many different types of fish in the Ozark lakes so you can fish for the fun of it or even for dinner depending on what your personal preference is. You can choose to rent the boat just for a few hours or for your entire trip which would be a cheaper rate. Make sure to check out all of the different kind of boat rentals before choosing the one for you.

Lake of the Ozarks Fishing

Going to the Lake of the Ozarks isn’t accomplished not having spent some time on the water. Some of the finest doing some fishing in the Midwest takes place on the Lake of the Ozarks each year. Fishermen from all over the United States travel to the region to fish the famous waters of the Lake.

From Largemouth Bass to Catfish, there is truly something for anglers of all types. Fishermen also get a chance to catch White Bass, Walleye, Crappie, and Hybrid Striped Bass. The wide array of fish makes it entirely possible that every fishing trip will be a success and the peaceful environment enhances the total experience.

Fishing is a yearly sport in this huge Missouri lake. The standard fishing season starts out on January 1 and runs to December 31. The conventional lures used in the springtime are generally crankbaits or jig-n-frog baits. These types of lures enable people to fish in most of the deeper spots, if the water in the lake is cold.

During the hotter months, lures like rubber worms can be used for top water fishing. This kind of fishing offers some of the most thrilling action and numerous fishermen journey here to catch fish in this spectacular lake. Surface or topwater fishing generally is best following the spring spawn. This normally occurs between April and May.

In the Lake of the Ozarks, bass are generally located in the deeper channels of the lake. They also often hang around the drop off points and near boat docks till the fall and into the winter months, once they have a tendency to move to shallow water again.

Lake of the Ozarks meets the needs and wants of countless freshwater anglers. Regardless of if you are a new comer to fishing or an experienced professional. When you just want to unwind and relax or catch the fish you’ve been dreaming about, then you’ve arrived at the right spot.

Robotics team competes for world title

A team of Camdenton High School students competed alongside groups from twenty nine various countries in a contest of world robotics. The Camdenton High School 4H LASER team placed fortieth in the eighty eight group field in the FIRST Robotics World Championships.

Greater than 2,300 groups from all over the Unites States participate in FIRST each year. Camdenton High School  was able to qualify to the FIRST Robotics World Championships during it’s initial two years of participating. In the 2010 FIRST Robotics World Championships, Camdenton High School finished seventy-fifth out of eighty three groups.

“We are going in the proper direction. Every year we have a lot more experience,” LASER coordinator and CHS technology instructor Mitch Comer explained.
A total of thirty one Camdenton High School students take part in this program. Each season, FIRST coordinators design and style a different activity for the students as well as their robots to participate in. This year, the robots have to pick up filled inner tubes and place them on pegs nine feet and five inches from the floor.

The Camdenton High team got top honors in the St. Louis regional qualifier that was held in March. The FIRST Robotics World Championships was held at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis. The competition showcased a live concert from the Black Eyed Peas, that also did the halftime show of the most recent Super Bowl, as well as an appearance by the famous actor Morgan Freeman.

The robotics team at Camdenton High School LASER accepted a sum of $16,000 from NASA and from 4H this year to be able to participate. The FIRST program motivates students to try taking some of the more demanding classes in science and mathematics.

“These young people are going to be dealing with the complex issues of the 21st century and improving our global economy with new inventions, research and jobs. Each and every year, we commemorate the accomplishments of the finest young minds in innovation and science and at the FIRST Robotics World Championships,” FIRST founder  and inventor Dean Kamen stated.

Ozark State Park Fun Statistics & Overall Popularity

Determined by the AAA Midwest Traveler publication, the Lake of the Ozarks happens to be home to 2 of the top 3 state parks within the Midwest. Located in Branson, Table Rock Lake State Park was voted most popular amongst the many AAA Midwest Traveler subscribers. The State Park at Lake of the Ozarks took second place (silver), and the State Park known as Ha Ha Tonka finished 3rd during the voting.

AAA Midwest Traveler invited their readers to vote for his or her favorite places eat, shop and visit. This spring, even more than 2,500 people cast votes for their favorite locations to go to in the Midwest.

Bill Arnold, the superintendent at Lake of the Ozarks State Park explained he thinks the variety is the reason why the park so well-liked. “I feel it is the beauty of the park and all of the amenities the park provided with the camper cabins and the group camps. We’ve got many miles of trails, both bike and equestrian trails,” Arnold stated.

The State Park, Ha Ha Tonka is most recognized for it’s castle ruins, but guests also love the fishing, trails and picnic areas. “The park is really an amazing assortment of karst features and incredibly varied landscapes,” superintendent Nancy Masterson said. “People can just go to the lake for a getaway. They are able to go to Ha Ha Tonka and enjoy a no cost day of hiking and enjoying the surroundings.”

AAA Midwest Traveler is read by just about 500,000 subscribers every other month. Readers reside in Missouri, Illinois, parts of Indiana and Kansas. Besides the very best state parks, AAA Midwest Traveler requested for input in 19 other categories including best little hotel, best big hotel, best bbq and best food festival.

Information aAbout the Lake of the Ozarks State Park:
Area: 17,626.55 acres
Year obtained 1946

Activities consist of boating, cave tours, camping, fishing, picnicking, lodging, marina, equestrian, swimming, hiking, backpacking and mountain biking.

Rembering the Ozarks as a whole

Bring up Lake of the Ozarks State Park and virtually everyone thinks about water. But they are actually forgetting about a great deal of land. “Something such as 17,600 acres – we are the biggest state park in Missouri,” explained a naturalist from the Missouri Dept of Natural Resources, Cindy Hall. “We are also among the most popular; we now have more than a million guests each year.” A lot of those people come because the Lake of the Ozarks, which is a popular place for fishing and boating in the Midwest. The lake is actually owned by AmerenUE, using the state park wrapping all around it’s Grand Glaize Arm.

The Lake of the Ozarks State Park has 2 beaches and 2 marinas with boat ramps as well as rentals, supplying public access on a shoreline which is mainly independently owned. “Those tend to be very busy places during the summer time weekends,” Cindy Hall stated. The park produces something similar to a retreat for boaters and fishermen wanting to get away from the watery congestion on the lake’s main channel. Because it’s a private lake, construction was permitted down a lot of it’s shoreline about the main channel. But the Lake of the Ozarks State Park property that boundaries the Grand Glaize Arm is basically devoid of restaurants, condos and resorts. Guests will find private, tree-lined coves, even during those congested summer weekends. “Lots of folks choose to go to this arm on the Lake of the Ozarks due to the fact that it’s just quieter,” Hall mentioned. “It has come to be sort of a mecca.” However the park has numerous attributes which have absolutely nothing to do with all the water. “Lots of people consider the beaches and the marinas are the Lake of the Ozarks State Park, and there is little else to it,” she said. “However anything you would discover at different state parks, you will find here as well.”

The Lake of the Ozarks State Park features 12 specific trails spanning some 50 miles for just about everyone’s benefit — hiking, mountain biking, backpacking and equestrian. Actually boaters even have one of their own in the Lake of the Ozarks only marine trail – consisting of numerous buoys over 10 lake miles which allows people to see the park’s glades, woodlands and geologic characteristics from the water.

Visit the Kon Tiki Resort Today

After escaping from the constraints of corporate America, Denise and Jim Bennett decided to become the new owners of a thirteen unit Kon Tiki Resort.

Jim says that it was all started off partially by way of a mid-life crisis. “It ended up being aggravated because the intimate and small organization of 35 individuals both of us joined almost 30 years ago was combined into an impersonal firm of 30,000 at the period of our own early retirement 9 years ago. This resort looked like a viable alternative,” Jim said.
Having a healthy desire to be able to spend much more time outdoors and work with his hands more, Jim imagined running a little resort would start up endless possibilities for an former handyman.

Denise required a lot of convincing, wanting to know the realistic question – “What do we truly know pertaining to running a vacation resort?” “During the early days it seemed like the actual answer to this question was, ‘Obviously not enough,’” said Jim.

With a great deal being changed at the Lake, exactly why did you look it was essential to keep the little resort up and running?

There is obviously the actual remembrance factor. We actually provide a window to the Lake the actual way it was in the past – pay attention to playing catch and throwing, family picnics washers, fishing, swimming and boating, in which smaller sized boats have an opportunity to survive on the Lake. And seemingly, you can still find lots of people that love this experience. However, there is also the matter of what the daily growing number of individuals, activity and boats does to the actual quality to the Lake of the Ozarks experience. Constructing a growing number of high rises on the lakeside delivers the inevitable impact you will see each and every weekend around the main channel. Little, lower density vacation rentals are the actual “green areas” larger cities are actually attempting to recover.

The Kon Tiki Resort features picnic areas and a beach, with cabin lodgings. Whether you are looking for a weekend getaway or for a second honeymoon you may want to consider the Kon Tiki Resort.

Odd & Unusual Lake of the Ozark Jobs

If you are currently living near the Ozarks or relocating to the area you may be surprised by what some people are doing to keep food on the table and gas in their car. It may not be the jobs that you would ordinarily think of applying for.

With each new city that you pass by have you ever wondered what the most popular jobs in the area are? How about a taxidermist? Can they help you with your income tax return? No, but they can help you to stuff and mount the any wild animals that you managed to kill during your hunting season.  This happens to be one of the most popular jobs near and around the Ozarks. Are you surprised?

Other odd and usual jobs of the Ozarks include professional clown, bail bondsman, games warden, tattoo artist, museum guide and a transportation direction. So my guess is that all of these jobs are popular and somehow are related to tourists. How I’m not sure but maybe the bail bondsman helps once the partying gets a little too much fun and they need a place too cool off for a bit?

So if you are looking for a job start with the places that you most likely would apply and you may just be dressing up like a clown before you know it. Hey, maybe the tips will be good! You never know until you try.  Or if you have recently killed a new “friend” that you want to take home with you make sure to stop by the taxidermists office so he can help you get them already for travel.

The museum guide really isn’t that big of a surprise with all of the museums that are in the area but it is a surprise that it’s such a sought after job. What will your next job be?

Ozark hotels versus Ozark condos

If you are planning to travel to see the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks for the first time you will be in for a treat. There is so much to see and do while visiting that you will not be able to do and see in one single visit. For attractions you can swim, fish, visit a variety of parks, boat rides, hiking, camping and more.

If you plan on camping there are several parks that allow you to pitch tents, park an RV or rent a cabin. However, the great outdoors as pretty as they are to look at some people just prefer to stay indoors when it’s time to sleep. For those who are looking for an affordable option when it comes to accommodations there are several hotels and condo rentals to choose from. So how which one is better a hotel or condo? There are a few different ways to compare the two based on your personal needs.

There are several things factors that can determine which is the better option for you. How many people are traveling with you? How long will you be staying? Do you have children with you? A hotel is limited on space and the amount of people that it can accommodate so if you have more than 3 -4 people with you then the amount of hotel rooms that you require need will increase. With a condo rental you can opt for a 2 or 3 bedroom which will give you the space you need for several people. With a condo you will also have a living room and kitchen that allows you to cook your own meals which will save you money especially if you are there for an extended stay.

If you are traveling alone or just as a couple a hotel would probably fit your needs because you don’t require that much space and it wouldn’t be too costly to eat out. However, with a family or a large group purchasing several hotel rooms for 4 or 5 nights could at up quickly along with paying for everyone each time you eat out. The condo will allow you to have adequate amount of room and you will only pay for about the same cost of one hotel room per night.

The Humble Beginnings Of The Ozarks

Bagnell Dam Strip Lake of the OzarksFishing, swimming, boating, camping, jet skiing, water skiing, parasailing…there is no dearth of the activities you can indulge in at the Ozarks. This is not all!! Lake of the Ozarks, located in the heart of Missouri, is also the most happening party place on the face of the earth. If you thought the most amazing parties in your life were the ones that you had with friends at college, then you surely have not visited the Ozarks. But, did you know that this popular tourist destination had very humble beginnings?

Lake of the Ozarks came into existence during the Great Depression when the entire world was facing the worst economic crisis. With millions left without homes and jobs, it was up to the American government to take measures to help people get on their feet. Lake of the Ozarks was mainly set up to generate hydroelectric power, thereby offering a source of employment and revenue to thousands of people. The Ozarks, which was until then one of the impoverished regions in the country, transformed itself into the most happening tourist destination in just a matter of years.

Lake of the Ozarks ParasailingThe Bagnell Dam at the Ozarks is a crucial structure that is responsible for preventing floods and also for generating electric power. Just the construction of this bridge led to 20000 people getting jobs and taking home money to meet their needs. All employees who played a role in constructing the dam were given three full meals a day along with accommodation facilities. Once the structure was ready, it attracted people in droves and became the hot spot at the Ozarks. In fact, till date most of the important events and parades in the Ozarks take place along the Bagnell Dam Strip.

With the passage of years, the region flourished and today the Ozarks plays host to events, celebrations and festivals all through the year. The locals here truly work hard and party even harder, living a life of merriment, unlike what it was when this region was born.

A Fun Time At Bagnell Damn Strip

We had a blast when we went to the Bagnell Dam Strip while vacationing at Lake of the Ozarks Missouri. We started with a few games of 10 cent ski ball at one of the several arcades located on the strip. I must say not only was it fun to play it was also a very affordable price at only a dollar for 10 games. Next we tried our hand at the bumper boats which was also a great time. My only regret is that I wore jeans and they got a little wet, so walking around the strip afterwards was not as enjoyable as I would have liked. Next we check out a few of the shops where we found some cool gifts and keep sakes of our trip. Finally we worked up a small hunger from all of the excitement so we stopped at Grandma’s Kitchen Candy store for some sweet and tasty treats. I had a good time at the Bagnell Dam Strip and I can’t wait to back again soon.
